It looks like Nokia users will be the first to get their hands on the new Angry Birds Rio May Beach Volley update, as it’s now available in the Ovi Store. Beach Volley includes 30 new levels and a new series of hidden melons to find.
As we predicted here on ABN, I received an email from trefoil, a loyal member of our crew and Nokia user. He points out that the yet-to-be-released worlds of Angry Birds Rio no longer include the labels that say the month they’ll be released. This is no doubt due to the flood of people who expected an update on May 1st, even though it only said, “May”, which, last I checked has 31 days.
Per Rovio, iOS users should see the new update sometime tomorrow, Thursday, 5/12/2011. Android users, it looks like it will be exclusively released via Amazon again for a certain period of time. Once that period expires it will come to the Android Marketplace.
I don’t understand how all this works? So, does a game developer submit his/her game to a store… like Ovi or Apple store… and then it’s up to the store to release the game? If so, how does Rovio know Apple is going to release the game tomorrow? I only ask in the hopes that maybe the game will be released today (in apple store) :-)
That’s exactly right, as I understand the process. It is also why Rovio (and other companies) rarely ever give exact dates for updates/releases. As for the original release, which was 22 Mar, the only way that happened was because Rovio asked for it. This means the release was ready and approved in advance, but would not appear until the 22nd.
Rovio doesn’t KNOW, which is why they say “hopefully”. Personally, I think that means they will submit the update to Apple (et al) late Wednesday or very early Thursday and bank on it not taking more than 24h to clear the screening / approval process. But it could be a very fast approval as well (priority to the top 5 in the AppStore?)

Really? Too bad I have no choice. Do you (or anyone who knows) think there will ever be a day when an apple user can shop and load at an Ovi or Amazon or whatever store and vice versa?
I doubt “App Stores” will intertwine. Exclusivity is good for each store. Should be in other App Stores very soon.

Thanks, AMslimfordy! You guys are so cool answering all of my silly questions! I still think Rovio should submit to apple first, but I guess that’s because I am an apple user. Although, it shouldn’t matter when the update comes out because my son will play all the levels, find all the golden fruits, then delete the game, reinstall and start all over again!
Here’s a funny story that I’ve picked up from Rovio’s Twitter over time.
Up until recently, Rovio would send its updates to all four platforms simultaneously: iOS, Android, Ovi, and webOS. However, the Ovi release would take longer, on average about a week longer, to clear the approval process. Thus, Ovi users would be behind the times. Rovio realized this and, the last two updates (Beach Volley and Easter Eggs!) were both sent to Ovi a little in advance. The thought being the earlyness would offset the “delay”, thus simultaneous releases.
As fate would have it, Ovi has gotten better and faster, so now they’re getting updates before iOS/Android.
Well, I guess I can wait. At least we’ve got the new Chrome version. , I noticed you (AMslimfordy) are a math whiz, very cool. I failed algebra 5 times. Finally passed it in my third year at UVA.
Haha I’ve heard that before. Eventually you just have to suck it and up learn that if G and H are groups, and φ : G → H is a group homomorphism, then:
1) ker(φ) is a normal subgroup of G,
2) image(φ) is a subgroup of H, and
3) image(φ) ≅ G / ker(φ).
If φ is surjective, then (3) implies H ≅ G / ker(φ).

Hey everyone who uses Google Chrome. Rovio’s Peter Vesterbaka just announced that Angry birds will be coming to the web. it only works on browsers that support WEB GL. it is working fine in Chrome and Opera for me/ http://chrome.angrybirds.com should work or you can google the chrome app store and search for ‘angry birds’ there.

when will it be on palm pre
Depends. As far as I know, Palm basically has two “Angry Birds”-compatible devices: Pre and Pixi.
One of these already has Angry Birds Rio: That one should update at roughly the same time as iOS/Android.
The other one does not have Angry Birds Rio: There is a firmware issue with (this Palm device) and Rovio will not submit any updates for that device until the issues are fixed.
Please let me know which is which. I THINK that Pre will get the update and Pixi has firmware issues, but I won’t swear by it.
It’s now July 28th and my Palm pre still doesn’t have the May 2011, and July 2011 updates on my Angry Birds RIO app. Did I waste my money when I bought the app? Is there something I should do to get them new levels?

Still no update to the achievements in GC, that normally comes along at least 24 hours before the update..
I am new to the IPhone and just got the Rio game in April. Will the new update come automatically or do I have to do something with my phone to get it?

The update will show in the AppStore (the icon is usually on the first page of the phone). Enter the AppStore and click “Updates” in the bottom right. If you have any, they will show up. Simply click “Update” (top-right). If none are available, it will say “All Apps are up-to-date”.

I have an Android device and the Amazon appstore just showed that Rio had an update. I downloaded the update but still nothing shows in the Rio app. Is anyone else having this problem?

Yes, still don’t see it on my android; I saw update available yesterday on appstore, but zilch! I got an email from rovio today, tried to get update, but it no longer appears. I may have to start over again:(. Will keep trying-hope I can get it without starting over.
just checked again, still no update for me. I don’t have the option to buy, just to open the app. I now have lost all progress, so be careful! Maybe it will work out in the next few days. I hope so, anyway :).
one more comment, this may help someone else. If you bought the game through amazon- open appstore- click menu- click myapps- click updates available, if you don’t see the update for rio, click menu and refresh my apps. worked for me. now I am off to play first two levels again and then hit the beach! can’t wait:).
i also have a Droid ( xoom) and for Rio from amazon, still no updates for me either. A little frustrating when my husband got his for his iPod last week but still has other levels to finish on the first 2 , and
here I sit finished with all of them and I’m waiting…
It is out for Amazon, but for some reason I have heard that it doesn’t show as an update. If you search the game manually in Amazon Appstore, you should be able to update that way. (It may say “Buy”, but if you already paid for it, you should not be charged again; if you are, it is an easy reversal by complaining.)
hey everyone. i looked at rio in the app store and it was advertising the new levels, so i hit “buy” and re-downloaded it… obviously they gave me it for free, and sure enough i have the new levels… i bet there is a glitch in the App Store update alert… but there ya go… go get the new levels!

I’ve tried downloading this update from the ovi store but as its already installed, it only gives me the option to launch it instead of downloading the update.
I’ve also tried via the in game update link but it tels me I have the newest version.

Nope you might just have to pretend like you are, you won’t be charged. But actually the update should be live for all by now anyway.

I play on an android phone so it will be released sometime later than others it seems. That’s kind of good. Since I got hooked on angry birds I don’t have a life. I’ve got three stars on all levels of the original as well as all eggs. I’ve got three stars on all seasons games, Rio, everything on every game. So you see if I have all of this you can see how I have no life, I’m always flying something thru the air to knock down, wipe out, etc. anything standing in the way of perfect scores. Maybe I’ll get things done around the house now!
I got Angry Birds Rio the first day it came out on the Amazon App Store. I have been waiting patiently for the new may update to come out. I saw that the update for the may levels came out just the other day and that it was available in the Amazon App store (which is wear i got it). my buddy was able to get the update, but i have not been able to get the update myself from Amazon. I keep checking the updates page regularly, and nothing shows up. when i manually search for rio on the app store it only gives me the option to open the program. I was posting this to see if anyone else has had this problem or if anyone knows why it is doing this. I do not want to unistall it and reinstall it in fear of losing all my data :p. if anyone could help that would be amazing! :)
I’m not an Android user and I’d like for someone to chime in after me to verify this but, yeah don’t delete and reinstall the game. I though I had heard something about searching for the game as though you didn’t already have it and clicking buy now and then it would start the download and you SHOULDN”T be charged again. Can an android user confirm this?

Last thing I heard was that Rovio won’t send updates to Palm until they mend their firmware issues.

Check this post for the latest info I’ve seen on Palm. (I actually had to do a Google search to find it, even tho it was only 3 days ago.) Rovio has been rather quiet lately, so I’m pretty sure there is no new information beyond this post.
