NFC stands for “Near Field Communication” and the Nokia C7 is one of the first devices to support it. So why should you care? Well, Rovio, the developers of Angry Birds, are betting that Angry Birds will be even more fun when played with friends. “Angry Birds Free with Magic” will come preloaded on the Nokia C7 as part of the Symbian Anna update and will contain twenty new levels, but only five will be unlocked to start.
This is where things get interesting. To unlock the other levels you have to find someone else with an NFC enabled phone–then, as shown in the video below–you swipe your phones and “magically” five new levels will be unlocked. So, in other words, to unlock all fifteen levels you’ll need to find three people with NFC enabled devices.
I’m not sure about you, but I don’t know many Nokia users (no offense). Thankfully, there is another way to unlock levels that may or may not tie into Rovio’s forthcoming “alternate reality” version of Angry Birds. The second way also requires NFC, but rather than having to find someone with a device you will scan an NFC tag, which can be embedded into an item, object, or product. Rovio has stated that clues to the location of these items should be forthcoming, so until then, check out the teaser video below.
Lastly, developers are working on a full version of Angry Birds Magic that will be released through the Ovi Store. No details yet about when (or if) it will come to other devices. Since there aren’t many NFC enabled devices Rovio would likely have to wait for devices to catch up or make changes in order to support ones that aren’t NFC capable.
birdleader, if you have any questions regarding angry birds on nokia/symbian i think im your man on this site, (although i only have an n8 no c7 =( )
at 0:07 you can see a button “get the full verison” maybe the nfc method is just if you don’t want to pay for the game. maybe n8 users will get it too, hopefully :)
The reason there’s a “Get the Full Version” button is because currently the phones are going to ship with Angry Birds Free with Magic (which, since Rovio has referred to this game as Angry Birds Magic through Twitter, I actually think is going to be called Angry Birds Magic Free), which will contain 20 levels (the first five are unlocked, and a total of three friends are needed to unlock the remaining fifteen).
Rovio will be working on a full version of the game as well, which will be released at a later date it seems. This will likely be a version with much more levels, be updated often, and (in my opinion) will be released on other platforms with other features as well.
Appreciate that!
What was that about?
Is those levels will be available on the iphone soon, even if their is no NFC ?
We’re not sure. Rovio clearly stated on Twitter that they have an interest to bring Angry Birds Magic to other devices once they add NFC support (so, for instance, if iPhone 5 added NFC support, I assume we’d see a version of Angry Birds Magic soon after release). They also stated that the NFC part of Angry Birds Magic is just one way to enhance the game, hinting that other methods of interacting may be implemented (such as 2D barcode scanning).
But, really, so far we know next to nothing about Rovio’s plans for Angry Birds Magic. Is the “biggest alternate reality game” ever going to be Angry Birds Magic? Or is that a different game altogether? Right now Rovio has a lot of different things being hinted at or partially announced. So until we know Rovio’s clear intentions, it’s hard to put everything together.
I think that Angry Birds Magic is going to be bigger than what was announced at Nokia’s site. We should definitely see ABM on different devices. I think that will tie heavily into the alternate reality teaser. And then we’ve got Angry Birds Facebook to add into this whole mess…
is it just for Nokia ??
That sucks. I want to play this on my ipod touch. All angry birds games should come out 1st on the iOS network since that where it all started out/the home of the angry birds.
yeah i agree
That’s just not realistic. I image they will end up doing something like this for iOS devices as well.
Yeah it should have been on iOS first, because if we can use bump to share images, then i’m sure this will be released on iOS pretty soon.
The Angry Birds Chrome levels are not on iOS either.
Does the incredible has the NFC device?
No I don’t think the incredible has NFC. It’s not currently very widely used in the US. NFC is picking up a lot in other countries, especially Japan, where it is used to make payments. Instead of swiping your credit card you swipe your phone. It’s a great technology and I hope the iPhone gets it with the next one because I believe that would be the jump the US needs to get retailers to start implementing the tech.
After watching the video on the AB Park in Finland and reading the posts on this page I have a better understanding about AB Magic. Also have to thank @FujiToast for the explanation of NFC.
I love this site. Not only has it vastly improved my game, but I learn all about new technology as well. :-)
I don’t like it!!!!!! It’s very difficult to find NFC users so quick thought you have no many friends….It makes really no sense!!!…:[
The scenery is from Finland. Pigs are wearing Finnish hats, trees in the background are birches (Finland has a lot of birches) and there are lakes in the background. I know this because I am Finnish.
Symbian is actually the top mobile OS in the world. So Rovio is hitting a larger market with Angry Birds Magic. Yeah, it sucks that its not on iOS yet (which is only dominant in the US), but I can understand that they’re looking at things from a global market perspective.
Hey guys I’d like to ask a question I have a Nokia C7 and whenever I instal angry birds using nokia OVI suite it and it prompts me to finish installation via my phone my phone says that this version is not supported please I need help thank you
Hrm, I’m not sure about this one. You might have to email [email protected] and ask them. Please report back and let us know what they say.
I have Samsung Nexus (Google Phone) with NFC enabled, any thoughts on Symbian/Android compatibility maybe?
Any update to AB using NFC would be much better if it was universally compatible I think…
thanks very much
Rovio could release it on devices without MFC. Ones with barcode scanners could show a barcode on the screen for others to scan.
I just found a reason to get a nokia.
Hey, you don’t need to find 3 other guys with NFC, you only need to rename the level files and you can play the next 5 levels ;)
to bad they don’t just add the levels into the iPhone app.
i hate this. in the video the level is just one of the ab free levels. they just added the hats
we want it now ! give it to ios users ! i’ve waited 10 months and its not here !
Relax daniel. As we said in the last paragraph,
So you may wait forever. Rovio never claimed it would come to iOS.
Are you gonna post walkthroughs for Angry Birds Magic?
We don’t have access to Magic, sorry.
When will you have access to it?
Dude, who wants a Nokia?!
There is different levels in Angry Birds Magic.
We likely won’t have access to it, unless it is released for other platforms. None of us have a Nokia C7.
Seems like you will need to budget Nokia C7’s for admins. (Actually, didn’t notice how old this was. Did it already come out?)
It seems that more and more new devices come with NFC. Notably, the new Galaxy SIII and HTC One X. I wonder if Rovio has any immediate plans to bring AB Magic to these devices/platforms.
